I am writing about this journey, because I have heard about Macau being a popular destination for many Chinese tourists and I am curious to learn more. Also, I am very interested in Chinese culture generally and I really want to travel there one day.
When the weather had stabilized, members of the expedition started to analyze the temperature of the ocean between May 22-24 by putting thermometers to a 100 fathom depth - 183 metres (1 fathom is 1.83 metres) and taking measurements. On Friday 25 at 3 pm, the expedition crossed the equator again, but this time from a Northerly direction.
On May 30, Johann Neumann, the personal cook of Rezanov, died. It seems that Rezanov forced Neumann to go to Brazil. In Brazil he started coughing up blood, and Krusenstern suggested to pay him salary so Neumann could stay in Santa-Katharina to recover from his illness. Neumann decided to not stay and rejoin the expedition, however the climate around Cape Horn really made is health worse.
On June 8 at 9 am the crew were able to see the Hawaiian islands, and the boats arrived on shore around 2 pm. Locals on boats approached the ships and started to suggest small things for exchange.
A big leak opened on one of the ships, so sailors had to pump off the water once or even twice a day.
On June 10 at 8 pm the boat returned to the sea. They travel through the Pacific Ocean for a long time. In that time the boat Nadezhda visited Kamchatka 3 times and Neva. After that, the Nadezhda visited Japan, Nagasaki. Then both ships set off to Macau.
The weather became more clear on the 20th day in the sea. However, on November 17, when the boat was passing the Taiwan Strait, there a super stormy night. The captain ordered for the sails to be made safe and repaired; however, the old ones were tearing apart with every strong gust of wind. So new sails had to be errectedf. The boat anchored in Macau around 7 pm on November 20 when it was already very dark.
