From Rapla Around The World
The illustrations to the right are of events taking place on islands off the coast of Portugual, (top-right) is of a festival on St Catarina island and the one underneath (bottom-right) is on the island of St Miguel.
The first ever Russian ship circumnavigation of the world by a person originating from Estonia was led by the Baltic German Adam Johann von Krusenstern who was born near Rapla in a small village called Hagudi, Estonia on 10 October 1770. On this journey, he was acommpanied by another ship led by Yuri Lisyansky. Apart from the many epic journeys around the world he made, he spent most of his life in the area he was born, Estonia.
The purpose of this website is to celebrate and explore who he was, why he is important to Estonian, German and Russian history, and give a very brief account of his travels, particularly those parts of the journey that have spoken to me.
I will also write about my visit to the Academic Library of Tallinn University on Monday 25 April 2022, where I was able to see the original atlases and illustrations (Volume 1 and 2) and available through a book published about the journey around the world.
A short video of looking through the atlas.
The National Archives of Estonia also have coloured illustrations of the journey available on Flickr.
Adam Johann von Krusenstern's circumnavigation around the work took place between 1803 and 1805, starting from Kronstadt in Russia, then on to England, Brazil and from Brazil to Japan, China, and back through several countries.
